CHAPTER 7

Jack was not fine.

He was very, very not fine.

After changing into warm pajamas, Jack and Xorvash had snuggled on the couch and ended up having a Shrek movie marathon. Jack dozed off during the third film after lunch—which was some tasty grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup—and didn’t wake up again until later the next morning.

His nose was somehow stopped up and running at the same time. He was sniffing and sneezing, he ached all over, and he was absolutely exhausted. He hurt in places he didn’t even know were possible, his nose was raw from having to blow it so often, and he was certain it was the worst cold of his entire life.

And he blamed Xorvash entirely.

“You did this to me,” Jack grumbled as Xorvash tucked him into bed. “If you hadn’t run around outside looking for that damn salt…”

“I had the situation handled. You’re the one who ran outside without being properly layered against the elements,” Xorvash scolded. “You’re a squishy little human and now you’re infected.”

“I’ve been vaccinated for everything. Flu, COVID, all of it.” Jack groaned. “This is such bullshit. We still have so much to do.”

“Such as?” Xorvash sat on the edge of the bed, his tentacles stroking Jack’s hair. “What is left for the Kiss-mas?”

“A shit ton of shit. I don’t know. I can’t think. My brain is mush.”

“We still have twenty-two days—”

“No, today is Saturday.” Jack groaned again, even louder than before. “Christmas Eve is next Sunday. So, what is that? Eight days.”

“You said we had a week!”

“Yeah! And a week is seven days. ”

“It is twelve. Twelve days.” Xorvash booped Jack’s nose. “The sickness is affecting your brain, little meat cake.”

“You know we’re on Earth, right? And here a week is seven days.”

Xorvash frowned. “Are you sure?”

“Pretty sure.”

“Well!” Xorvash huffed. “It is still no matter. The decorations have been completed, and you have finished your gift shopping, yes?”

“Shit. The shopping.” Jack fumbled around for his phone. “Did I check out?”

“Do not forget the Pretty Princess Pony Palace.”

“I won’t.” Jack got his phone out of his pocket. “There’s a whole bunch of that Pretty Princess Pony stuff. Blankets, pillows, more plushies.”

“The palace is of the utmost importance.”

“I got it.” Jack sniffed as he scrolled, adding a few more items to the cart. “But I’m also thinkin’ Cecelia deserves a really nice Christmas.”

“What about her parents? Blenders?”

“Well…” Jack paused to think. “Maybe a fancy heating pad for her dad and one of those lavender pillow things for her mom?”

“I don’t know exactly what those words mean, but yes, let’s do that.”

Jack tried to ignore how much the final amount of his order was going to cut into his savings, but he went on and hit submit. “Whew. There. Christmas shopping complete.” He slumped against the bed. “We just gotta hit up the grocery store later this week for dinner. That should be it.” He snorted. “Oh yeah. And actually surviving the fucking day.”

“You need rest.” Xorvash kissed Jack’s brow. “We have plenty of time to prepare for the feast.
